As part of increasing your awareness and monitoring whether the sessions are useful to you, ask yourself what you need from today's session. Bear in mind that these needs might change during the session.
Some examples include:
To be heard and validated
To process a situation
To look at a situation with honesty
To gain perspective
To acknowledge the progress you made
To celebrate something
To face a something scary together
To challenge thoughts or behaviours
To problem solve
To learn or practice new coping skills
To work on relapse management
To repair from a rupture between you and the therapist
To review how the sessions are going
And many others
It is then important to voice these needs to your counsellor as this will ensure that both of you have a shared goal and understanding of what to do in today's session. You can do this verbally, or write it down on a note before the session and give it to your counsellor, or in other forms that make you feel comfortable.
