As part of increasing your awareness and monitoring whether the sessions are useful to you, ask yourself what you need from today's session. Bear in mind that these needs might change during the session.

Some examples include:

  • To be heard and validated

  • To process a situation

  • To look at a situation with honesty

  • To gain perspective

  • To acknowledge the progress you made

  • To celebrate something

  • To face a something scary together

  • To challenge thoughts or behaviours

  • To problem solve

  • To learn or practice new coping skills

  • To work on relapse management

  • To repair from a rupture between you and the therapist

  • To review how the sessions are going

    And many others

It is then important to voice these needs to your counsellor as this will ensure that both of you have a shared goal and understanding of what to do in today's session. You can do this verbally, or write it down on a note before the session and give it to your counsellor, or in other forms that make you feel comfortable.
